I built this in August 04, before MudGirls was formed, using clay right out of our garden, sand from near by, and instead of straw I used dried ferns and dog hair (from my sister in-law's St Bernard kennel next door!). Pachiel and I sculpted it into a dragon on the last day of building and we've baked in it weekly ever since.
Earth ovens employ cob to collect heat from a wood fire for the purpose of baking. A fire is started inside and is allowed to burn for a number of hours. The fire is then removed, and the thermal mass of the cob continues to radiate heat for many hours of baking. The resulting baked goods have a rich, delicious taste simmilar to stuff made in a wood-fired oven.
